30th open of Cappelle-la-Grande - Highlights of round 2
Naturally, round 2 at Cappelle-la-Grande is just as important as round 1 for several reasons : the round 1 winners must confirm their first round results, and we see strong amateur and even some professionnel players arriving on the top boards to compete with the tournament favorites.
Among the favorites, Ding won a beautiful and very technical game that we suggest you take a look at. Gupta (after a wild Benoni against the solid Sharif), Danin and Fier also delivered, while the strongman on the European tour this past summer (3 tournament wins in a row!) Andrei Vovk, prevailed after a huge battle with the French Junior Champion Paul Velten.
Our colomnist, IM Jean-Noël Riff chose to analyze Ganguly's win over Nestorovic because it demonstrates what often happens when players rated around 2400 ELO and the tournament favorites lock horns : if one insists on playing for a draw without a clear plan, the difference in levels often quickly decides the result.
However, Iturizaga, Negi and Sumets couldn't break free of their determined opponents.
In the big upsets category, Carmaciu (2423) beat Kravtsiv (2601), the young Belgian star Godart (2359) beat Kurajica (2505), Gajek (2270), an under-16 Polish player accustomed to strong performances in Cappelle, disposed of Dgebuaze (2521). Finally, nothing is working for Mathieu Cornette (2566) who lost again, this time to Hanne Goossens (2092!) who scored the biggest upset in round 2.
Some of the French players had nice draws: Terrieux with black against Vasquez (2577), Clery with black against Chernychov (2504) and our colleague Loiseau also with black against Heberla (2544) .
The prize for best French performance goes to Sylvia Collas, who, as black, beat Grandmaster Stojanovic (2501) and showed that she is still dangerous when playing in the Cappelle arena!
