30th open of Cappelle-la-Grande - Summary of round 3
The first real battles start between GMs on the top boards.
Top-seeded Ding drew in 24 moves with an apparently well-prepared Papin (2515) in a wild Queen's Indian.
The two Indians (Gupta and Ganguly) handled their “white” games well, Gupta's game was analyzed: his fight with the young French star Lagarde was a work of art.
Other favorites won, having a larger ELO advantage over their opponents of the day. Now there are 7 players in the top group with a perfect 3 out of 3 score. The matches this afternoon will mark a turning point for the fortunes of many players in Cappelle!
Unfortunately for the underdogs, no notable upsets occurred on the top 60 boards, which is in itself notable. There were however plenty of nice draws, Damian Justo continued chugging along with a new perf against Piorun (2570), Gajek drew Miezis (2548) and the young Italian Rambaldi drew Hovhanisian (2526).
Among French players, there were new perfs by Collas who drew Malakhatko (2547), Clery who split the point with Djukic (2551) and also Abergel's draw with Bachmann (2572).
There's another round this afternoon, with some nice matchups scheduled!
