30th open de Cappelle-la-Grande - Highlights of round 6
Two-thirds of the way through the tournament, the battlefield is clearing :
Ganguly continues to throw off the challengers by getting the best of Fier, who recklessly refused to repeat the position. The Brazilian was severely punished.
The 3rd-placed Piorun had a good opportunity as White against Vovk. But Vovk has been in great shape for the past year and confused Piorun in a well-played Dutch Defense.
So now Ganguly is alone at the top with 5.5 points ahead of a pack of players with 5 points, including the rising star of the tournament, the Russian junior Martynov (2352) who is performing at 2760 after his latest victory over the Grandmaster Arizmendi (2547).
Tomorrow the leader will face off against Kharitonov (2554) with White and confirm his lead position.
Among the surprises of the day, other than Martynov, the U18 Chinese player Chu (2288) with a 2458 performance, the U16 Polish player Gajek (2270) with a performance at 2470 and also the Argentinian Justo (2315) performing at 2542.
The French connection sees Maxime Lagarde staying in contact with the top at 4.5 points and will take on Sumets (2628) on table 8. Migot (2379) will play on board 20 against Maiorov (2520) and must perform well to stay on course for an IM norm.
Outstanding performances include Sylvia Collas who is assuredly in great shape (performing at 2532), the U18 Wekermans (1867) who has a performance at 2278 and also the U20 Schmit (2109) with a performance at 2347.
Disappointing, however, is Mazé who seems stuck (3.5 of 6) after 2 losses and the French champion Maizuradze (3 of 6 and a 2060 perf). For some players, Cappelle is «the northern hell»!
Tomorrow, round 7 : a decisive round for the top boards and also for the potential «normers»!
- Round round 6 - Papin, V. (2515) - Kovacevic, A. (2572), E12, 0-1, GM Yannick Gozzoli
